Love knows how to listen
To kindly lend an ear
To all that wants revealing
Both gentle and severe.

Listen to the voices
Listen to the hush
Listen for the nuance
Resist a need to rush.

Listen with perception
Listen with your heart
Listen for a doorway
For a place to start.

Listen like you mean it
Listen with your care
Listen to the whispers
Behind the words that glare.

Listen for what’s lacking
Listen for the hum
Listen to the lively
Listen to the numb.

Listen through the murky
Listen past what’s clear
Listen to the surly
And cling to what is dear

Listen with intention
With caring bright and bold,
Give to those who most need
Their stories to be told.
