Selfish: Ode To An Unpopular Friend

Selfish…  Self-ish,
Oh, how you get a bad rap!

You’ve been tangled, twisted, distorted, deformed,
Made to be the rotten carrot to dangle,
The hot potato to get rid of the moment you’re in hand.

You’ve been oversimplified, misunderstood, manipulated and made taboo,
No one wants to wear you on the red carpet of life for all the world to see.

You have been used as a threat,
Marked as a terrorist,
A menace to manufactured ideas of homeland security.

It’s understandable on one hand,
And criminal on another.

A crime against Nature,
The Nature of Self.

Like me, you have your limitations and your vastness.
Like me, you are evolving.

You are an abiding internal reference point,
How can I make wise choices without you?

How can I honor and care for my-Self, and all I hold dear,
Without all you bring to the table?
