Bluebird of Friendship (to Carol)
The bluebird is fabled as herald of joy.
I’ve asked her to add to her tidings:
Whenever you glance where I’m perched in your heart
She’ll sing of our friendship abiding.
Our vision of aging included much time
Indulging in each other’s presence.
Who could have foreseen what twists lay ahead?
That would have required great prescience.
We’ve often encouraged the testing of wings.
Life branched out, still we nested sweetly.
We’ve shared cups of laughter, confidence, tears
While airborne in trusting completely.
O bluebird so gentle, we’ve been doubly blessed,
Each meeting a mutual hour.
When days bring us absence, our hearts still attest
To our steadfast and unfailing bower.
